Bar cart trophies might be more subtle today than in the Mad Men era, however, liquor brands are still producing them, sometimes a thing of beauty or museum-worthy, and sometimes an object of shock and awe. I can thank my mom’s dad for the early education into the wild and wonderful world of collectible liquor bottles.
My grandpa Jerry had the ultimate man cave in his basement, complete with workout equipment, a museum-worthy collection of arrowheads and pottery shards collected on his hikes, and a fully stocked bar. This bar wasn’t just a shelf with a few dusty bottles, it was made of oak, with a proper countertop bar that wrapped around the side of the far room with four stools and walls covered with his taxidermied hunting trophies, like a bobcat mounted on a log, ready to pounce—or a giant (and frightening) catfish with its jaws open wide. But what I remember most as a kid sneaking down there to poke around were the bottles lined up above it. They were whiskey mostly, in collectible decanters in shapes I’d never seen before, like animals, cars, and floral figures.
